The February Athletes of the Month are Kenneth Giang from the Boys Varsity Wrestling team and Giselle Alarcon from the Girls Varsity Basketball team.
Kenneth Giang is well deserving of student athlete of the month, not only for his actions on the mat, but also for his outstanding work in the classroom. Not only has Kenneth maintained a 3.5 gpa this entire season, but for the school year. Kenneth was also a captain for the boys wrestling team, showing great leadership skills and guidance for the new up and coming wrestlers. Coach Bustillos believes that it is Kenneths work ethic in the classroom that translates to the wrestling room which pushes him to succeed so greatly in both. Only a sophomore, we can expect great things from this young man for years to come.
Giselle has been a perfect example of what an El Monte student- athlete embodies. Giselle is a captain and leader for the varsity girls basketball team. She also excels in the classroom maintaining a 3.8 GPA.
Giselle shows great leadership skills. As a captain, she is always encouraging her teammates, bringing out the best in them. She has spent time with her team, teaching fundamentals and working hard with her teammates, as well as against them in practice.
While accomplishing all of this, she led the league with 11.6 rebounds a game, while also averaging just under 10 points and 4 steals a game. In our playoff game she had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
She is a tri-sport athlete, playing Volleyball, Basketball and Track for El Monte. Congratulations to Giselle on a stellar season and career at EMHS. We expect great things from her in the future.
